Chora Choruses, 2010

76 thought noises, keyboard, stool, laptop

Exhibition: Chora Choruses, 2010, KINGS ARI, Melbourne

In Plato’s terms, chora is defined as an area of uncertainty between the intelligible and the sensible - Chora doesn’t look like anything, it doesn’t resemble anything, but if it did, it would look a lot like stupidity.1

A selection of 76 thought noises (collected in making the work Um Chorus ) are translated through software to the 76 keys on a digital keyboard placed in the gallery space and able to be “played” by the audience.

The work explores “other space” and possibilities, as well as the weight of responsibility; a collection of artists and their self-conscious thought noises made available to be “played”, resulting in either new lyrical versicles and responses or “chopsticks” in ums.
